Durham Farmers’ Market to Host a Costume Contest

Durham, NC – October 14, 2014 – The Durham Farmers’ Market (DFM) is hosting its first Annual Vendor Costume Contest on Saturday, October 25, 2014. Many of the vendors will be coming to Market in costume to sell their goods and customers can vote for their favorite(s)! This event will be a fundraiser for DFM’s Double Bucks Program, which is part of its SNAP/EBT Program.

Here’s how it will work: customers can purchase tickets to vote at the Market’s information table at the center of the pavilion. Tickets are $1 each, or 6 for $5, 12 for $10, and 25 for $20.  Each ticket equals one vote. Plus, each ticket enters customers into a raffle to win a $50 gift certificate to Geer Street Garden. Customers then vote for their favorite costume by dropping the tickets into jars at the vendor’s booths.  Voting early and often is highly encouraged! All funds raised through ticket sales will benefit the Double Bucks Program.

About SNAP and the Double Bucks Program: In April, the Durham Farmers’ Market began accepting SNAP benefits. SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the program formerly known as Food Stamps. In July, after raising some funds, the Market implemented an incentive program called Double Bucks.  The Double Bucks Program matches SNAP dollars up to $10, which helps customers using SNAP benefits stretch their dollar even further.  This means that when a customer using SNAP spends $10, they will get $20 worth of fresh food! We are working to raise $10,000 for this program to ensure future funding.

About the Durham Farmers’ Market: The Durham Farmers’ Market is an All Local, Producer-Only Farmers’ Market. The Market’s 71 vendors are all located within 70 miles of Durham and only sell items that they have grown, raised or produced themselves. Farmers and artisans at the market will feature a variety of seasonal produce, as well as meats, eggs, cheeses, baked goods, prepared foods, preserves, flowers, landscaping plants, vegetable seedlings, crafts and more.

The Durham Farmers’ Market is located at 501 Foster Street, Durham NC 27701 in the Pavilion at Durham Central Park.  The Market is opened on Saturdays, year round, 8am-Noon April through November and 10am-Noon December though March, and Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30pm from mid-April to mid-October.
